Peru is situated in the western part of South America and is considered one of the most diverse countries in the world.  With multi-cultures, archeological sites, traditions, unique gastronomy, and vast natural reserves, Peru has become a center of attraction to many tourists from around the world.

Unfortunately, Peru still has many regions that suffer from extreme conditions and poverty.  Citizens of these regions simply don’t have the necessary means to obtain basic necessities such as food or clothes.  In some cases, the local governments don’t have enough resources to provide assistance.

During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Peru was one of the most affected countries worldwide with more than 18,000 deaths.  The lack of vaccines and other medical resources contributed to the high number of deaths.  As a result of the pandemic, many many families lost one or both parents, which made it more difficult to generate any source of income and, in some cases, to care for the children and the ill.  Many people were laid off and were not able to work for a very long time until the pandemic was under control and the restrictions were lifted.

AREQUIPA

Arequipa is situated in the south of Peru, and is surrounded by three snow-covered volcanoes.  Most of its buildings are built with white volcanic rock called “sillar”.  This is why Arequipa is also known as “the white city”.  Arequipa’s European influence and indigenous customs can be appreciated in its architecture, traditions, and cuisine. Arequipa is also home to the Colca Canyon, which is one of the deepest canyons in the world.
